The best books, of course, were the ones that spoke of food and meals between adventures and mishaps, the ones that gave her names and visions of wayfarer's bread and fireroot broth and starlight cordial. She developed a personal library of substitutions and associations for every unearthly herb and mythic animal that could not be bought, even as she made a hobby of traveling just to see if maybe, somewhere, she really could get unicorn's milk instead of goat's. The fictional friends she imagined at table with her might not have recognized the resultant dishes, but she liked to think each bite dragged her world just a little closer to the imagined ones she thought of as her true home.
