Even the help of a second puberty hadn't given him the growth spurt he had wanted, and he couldn't shake the constant awareness that everyone around him was taller, looked down on him literally if not metaphorically. That was before he met the salamander folk, basking on the shores of a natural spring, trading their stories among the mossy undergrowth. He found the thing he loved most about finally being larger than someone was the chance to be careful with them, to turn all his outsized strength to handling damp and delicate limbs tenderly, and the salamander folk called their new friend a gentle giant.
