The mundane trappings of his work at the library took on new excitement when seen through the lens of his girlfriend visiting during his workday for the first time. After prowling through the stacks, sniffing and prodding in ways that he found very difficult to ignore, she bounded up to the circulation desk to say, “Well, I still don’t understand how most of this works.” Then she deposited a handful of objects on the desk before him, like a cat offering a mouse, and continued, “But I found two hidden candy bars, a tiny snare trap in the folklore section, and this nice amulet, so it’s pretty interesting so far.”
