It had been a long time since she went back to her hometown, after moving out for college to a place that wasn’t a sister (or even a cousin-twice-removed) city. Being the only safe haven for miles around, being the one who ran the secret cryptid speakeasy or the weekly weird-friendly cuddle pile, the hiding and the hinting, had become normal for her. Returning to town, seeing people and things on the street that would have meant reports to neighborhood watches or police elsewhere, gave her a dizzying mix of fear and elation.
