After seeing a random Youtube ad (they are good for something!) for the movie A.X.L., I treated myself to seeing it. It was made even sweeter by the fact that the day job has been...how do I say this? FUCKING COCONUT BANANAS BONKERS. Ahem. And as such fucked up my original plan to go to the movies. My mum offered to drop me off and pick me up on my day off while she ran errands, though, and that made everything better. So! Movie.
Let me preface this by saying that Real Steel is one of my all-time favorite movies. And while A.X.L. was not quite as good, it was very much in the same vein, did exactly what it said on the tin, and made me very happy. It promises to be the story of a boy who finds and befriends a runaway robot dog being developed for warfare, and they must then protect each other from the developers trying to recover it.
Like Real Steel, it is a "blue collar underdog finds damaged robot, they rescue each other" story, with found family feels and messages about rising above your station (please do). *chef kiss* Perfect. I'll take a dozen more.
I will say, they cast two of the villains as people of color (plus one more antagonist?) but only one hero. Which I found unfortunate. And there are a few moments that are a bit plothole-ish, though I mostly only thought about them when recapping the movie to Mum. That's about the extent of my objections, though.
