The howls of shapeshifters echoed across the water from deep within the trees, but those gathered at the lakeside had no attention to spare for such ordinary celebrations. The pumpkin boats bobbed into view through the low drifts of mist, each one bearing a light that, as they neared the shore, resolved into many tiny flames, dozens ferried by each boat. Instinctively, each person watching from the shore recognized which of souls represented belonged to them in some way, and they stumbled out into the cold water up to their knees to stand with cupped hands awaiting their beloved dead.
