In the slow moments at the hardware store, when no one needed her to help find the right tool or advise on a bit of homebrew mad science, she liked to explore the fittings department. Hundreds of little drawers, some of them generations old, rusted, labeled with handwritten slips of paper long since faded into illegibility, served as a breeding ground for new metal and rubber bobbles of unknown uses. She often wondered, when she slid open a drawer of wingnuts and found something capable of flight amongst them, if they were assembling themselves or being helped along by someone else.
