Visitors sometimes remarked that the old cemetery needed some attention, as the forest had begun to overtake its borders. Tree roots ensnared headstones, tapping into marble and granite and other, more deeply buried things. Locals explained the truth: caretakers worked to maintain the fragile underworld connection the forest afforded them, the voices of loved ones rustling in the branches overhead.
