Predictive text features quickly gave rise to speculative forms of poetry, a kind of personalized word salad that, on occasion, produced unexpectedly poignant nonsense. It didn’t take long for an app to come along that automated it, allowing one’s phone to pick through texts and emails for speech patterns and assemble them into poems in the background. The privacy nightmare that followed, with phones exchanging personal information and accreting their own baffling search histories, should have seemed inevitable to anyone familiar with the inspiration hunger of all writers.
