From sacred performances to rap battles, she found a rich tradition of musicians facing off from which to choose. What she called recorded performance magic sessions–harp players across from turntables, drummers versus throat singers, holding down the elemental quadrants–were really just an excuse for her to stand at the center with microphone in hand. The maelstrom buffeted her, something more than noise, something more than ritual, a universal song surrounding her as long as the music flowed.
