“It says here you worked on the Winchester House restoration,” they said as they looked over yet another potential replacement for the third architect to abandon the project. “Renovation, yes, one of them,” he corrected enigmatically, his face, with its crow's feet and laughter lines and remarkably white teeth, bent over the existing plans. The proposed house, with its parabolic hallways and irrational number of doors, had languished for years, but they found themselves unable to imagine this man troubled by a little thing like time.
