“Slow day, huh,” the food pantry volunteer asked as he accepted the tray stacked with a wobbly pyramid of bagged rolls, bagels, and loaves. Leslie juggled a second sheet pan of individual clear boxes, jammy pastries and cinnamon rolls sweating stickily beneath the plastic. “Some days, the people who can afford to buy just aren’t hungry,” they said with a shrug, “but there’s always somebody else who is.”
