No one ever mentioned--if they told stories of grown-up children finding their way through doorways a second time--how tight the fit would be when you were no longer nine years old, but she was accustomed to being too big for everything by now. The cloak, which had seemed so voluminous to her child self, now barely closed across the fullness of her belly as she stepped out into the familiar-foreign landscape of endless crystalline winter. The twenty years between adventures felt suddenly like one long and abundant summer, a lifetime of harvest on which she had fattened herself, just so she could stride across the ice fields now with a layer of fat and experience to insulate and sustain her.
