When the manager asked him, “Have you ever worked in retail before,” and got the answer, “No, but I’ve done a lot of sewing and I understand fabric,” she thought that meant he understood care instructions and appropriate uses. A few weeks after hiring him, though, she began to notice the bolts of fabric looked brighter, their colors richer, their hand more full and pleasant to the touch. She tried to spot him doing anything special to care for them, but all she ever saw were soft smiles and inaudible comments and the newly-cooperative tulle fluttering toward him with unexpected purpose and affection.
