scrubjayspeaks: Town sign for (fictional) Lake Lewisia, showing icons of mountains and a lake with the letter L (Lake Lewisia)
In the distance waited the town and its people, full of the noise of tongues and clicking teeth, loud with the memory of speech. Overhead, here in the thickness of trees and boulders, birds whooped and skrawked in senseless conversation, even the melody stripped now from her perception. And she, alone at last in this blissful shelter beyond the weight of semantics, walked in silence, having left all her languages behind like so much unwanted luggage of an overburdened traveler.

In an astonishing bit of luck, I found all the things I needed to buy today, even the ones that were supposedly sold out. The iron hooks that will be used for Halloween decorations weren't on the shelf, so we asked a person doing the stocking. He said they were sold out and then, as he was speaking, set down a box that turned out to be precisely those items, much to his surprise. I also managed to avoid going to the hated big box store for soap and hair bleach, which I've only been able to find there, because the grocery store had both of them and had them on sale to boot. The universe took pity on this one today, for which I am grateful.

Meanwhile, my yogurt has successfully yogged! I'll do a full write-up on it tomorrow, once it has had a chance to chill and set up. But it is wobbly and yogurt-like, so I know the starter I used actually had enough culture to make it ferment. I need to work out how much yogurt I get out of the half-gallon of milk. I'm curious how it compares to store-bought in terms of cost. Even if it's more expensive, it might still be worth it if it's particularly delicious. (Though it will need to be VERY delicious, as I really do like the brand I eat right now.)

The replacement shipment of the black hair dye seems to be stuck in USPS purgatory permanently. It's also too smoky and gross out to repaint my new plank rack even though I bought spray paint for it. So it's been a mixed bag on projects so far. Still: yogurt!
