Sometimes we exist simply to serve as the introductory party between soulmates whose love story we will never notice. We bring home a new geranium plant for the backyard, not knowing that it will spend a lifetime twining its roots with those of the dogwood tree, sending billets-doux via bumblebee. Whole lineages of field mice will play out their star-crossed dramas in the belly of a Ford Pinto, that rusted-out Verona you made for them when you forgot, again, to call the scrapyard.
