The sight of the two of them side by side on the first day of freshman year, before they ever knew each other, launched their crueler classmates into a stream of nicknames that coalesced into Double Feature--"a couple of horror shows," someone would gleefully explain if given half the chance. The facial scarring made them the monster, and the cold, reptilian watchfulness made her the alien, and each year should have been a sequel that pitted them against each other for others' entertainment. Instead, they wrote themselves a kinder story, a cross-species romance salvaged from the cutting room scraps.
