As summer begins to wind down and the return of the school year looms, we anticipate soon celebrating the Days of Feral Children, an informal but beloved holiday. Of course, none of us, not even the children themselves, can know in advance exactly when the days will occur, but the seasonal markers and portents give us some warning of what is to come. Only when the children of the town run howling and gleeful into the forest and beside the lake, acting out one final spree of lawless youthfulness under the waning sun, will we know for sure--too late, as ever, to stop them.
