The summer heat drove her into the shade, into the shadows, into the deep places of the forest where everything felt still and cool under her hands and knees. By then she had to crouch and crawl and creep to fit beneath low branches and between tumbled logs and stones, and it didn't occur to her that this was not a place made for humans. Soon, the mud and the roots and the dark started to seem like home, started to be part of her, and what had begun as trespass became simply homecoming.
