The excitement of Halloween ramped up days before the holiday itself, like a mounting sugar high, in a profusion of black and orange, skeletons and masks, chocolate and icing. Test runs of costumes and makeup became a pretense to wear them for more than just one night, and the baking and candy-making that had to be started ahead of time naturally meant indulging early as well. The spirits technically needed to wait for the mystical conditions to be right to rejoin their living friends, but that was nothing that couldn't be preempted with some candles, herbs and enthusiasm.
