He invented color names for all the things he saw that no one seemed to notice. Names for the streak of white under a phantom cat's chin, the silver-brown of shadows cast by the interplay of obelisk and moonlight, the faint ghostly green of grass persistently sprouting under a newly-laid stone tablet in the woods: he identified each and gave it a handful of syllables to call its own. He greeted them like friends whenever he encountered them, those overlooked shades that never made it to paint swatches or fashion lines.
