The late nights at the office and the weary trudging home hadn't gone unnoticed by the creature, still watching shyly from the storm drain, but it took a week before it thought maybe it could do something to help. Under cover of darkness, it oozed the trash and recycle bins down to the curb, brought up the mail from the box, and watered the pots out front. Slime droplets wobbled in its wake, soft and dark and iridescent, but by morning they had sunk into lawn and potting soil and gravel, leaving only the small kindnesses as evidence of its visit.
