The animals--you could call them badgers, and you wouldn't be wrong exactly--tunneled under the foundations of the Grand Cedars Hotel, shoving out loose soil and shoring up walls with timber into stable rooms to echo the crumbling manmade ones above. Below the great ballroom, they carved and polished the undersides of each square of marble dance floor until it had been worn thin as glass, one huge skylight that opened onto the curtained dark. In time, as with all badger setts, the little-used side passages became the haunts of other creatures, smaller or stealthier and able to pass through occupied territory without arousing suspicion.
