Stilts supported the front of the house, allowing it to jut out over the uneven face of the mountain. Yet even with that advantage, the house seemed impractically shallow when seen from the side, its walls terminating suddenly in partially finished stonework before dissolving entirely into raw mountainside. Only those inside could see how the dining room extended beyond the facade into the preexisting cave mouth there, and they slept in bedrooms down in the heart of the mountain.
