I'm bitterly disappointed that the Tampa Bay Lightning managed to clinch a victory in the Stanley Cup finals last night. Oh, not because I'm a fan of the Canadiens and was deeply invested in seeing them win instead. It's just, I really wanted it to go to a fifth game on Friday, when I could actually stay up late enough to see the whole game. Because, see, I...I have decided to get into hockey. Sort of. I guess.
It's just that on the Wonderful! Podcast, Griffin and Rachel were talking about watching hockey a lot more during the pandemic. And they just made it sound like a lot of fun. I think I've watched any portion of a hockey game maybe three times before in my life. I know exactly nothing about it but this: knife shoes, cold oval, bendy stick. Which, honestly, turns out to be enough for me.
Also, my parents made dismissive noises about hockey--so violent, just fighting all the time!--when I was growing up, and I am nothing if not viciously contrary.
And happily, one of the two television channels that comes in at my house was carrying the finals. I am not currently planning to go the bonkers route of getting the NHL app, which I understand might give me access to games NOT broadcast by a single channel that takes pity on people living in the sticks. That seems like a bridge too far at this stage. But I at least enjoyed my handful of days in hockey fandom so far.
