In the early days, they asked each other, "would you want to take a mate," "will you need to obtain offspring," and other such variations on the theme of "are you sure." Owing to gross anatomical incompatibilities, neither of those would be something they could provide for each other, and they each had cultural expectations behind them regarding the necessity of such things. Day by day, year by year, though, came the answer, "you are the only partner I need," and "we are family enough," and variations on "I choose you over all others."
