Grandmother's house always seemed to be acquiring some new piece of kitsch--pink porcelain kittens, glass roses, throw pillows embroidered with mawkish messages--so the little resin door, affixed with short tacks to the trunk of the big birch tree, fit right in down to the "welcome fairies" sign picked out in tiny pink letters in the middle. The child, when she found it, knocked on the door with her tree-climbing-rough hand, but it wasn't until the next time she visited that it had opened. Belly to the grass, eye pressed to the open doorway leading impossibly far into the tree trunk, she didn't see any kittens or roses, but she was quite certain something was looking back.
