The foraging and wilderness survival courses taught her how to find and prepare various sources of food and water from what the forest held, but she had really only been interested in a few things. She collected pine nuts fresh from the tree and scraped spoors from tender young fern heads and dug up the fruiting bodies of a variety of mushrooms. These all she swallowed down, whole when she could manage it, and willed them to take root inside her, a forest preserve established in her belly.
