Each time she looked at the moon on this side, she remembered gazing at it through the watery wrong side of the sky with her companion, who said, holding up a paw to bracket the barely visible edges of the dark moon, "The bulb has burned out, and the One Up There hasn't changed it yet." Once, teary-eyed with drink and sorrow, xie whispered, "It used to be a candle, and every full moon, we collected the dripping wax in jars to seal our boats." She hadn't known if this was myth or history, only that there were no more boats in those days.
