The term “hawk” was frequently used to indicate a flying predator of some other creature, is in mosquito hawks and tarantula hawks. Though not a scientific designation, it was well-documented and familiar to the sort of researcher who might travel to out-of-the-way habitats. It did, however, create some frantic gesturing and double-checking of translations when they understood the locals referred to anything as a “whale hawk.”
