The feather, when she brought it back with her to the place she had once called home, appeared to be a dull gray-brown, and tattered as well, with some of the vanes singed down to stubs. If she showed it to her classmates, they would compare it--unfavorably--to a peacock feather, and they would take it as evidence of no adventure in another land. None of them would ever see it shining gold and red, flaming from within, for it had been made to be seen in the light of another, stranger sun, as she had been.
