The ritual took ages, if only because there was a limit on how fast a person could drink gallons of pigment, magical or otherwise. Despite the solemn occasion, they found themselves joking about milkshakes and smoothies and juice cleanses as they passed around each pitcher: ruby and onyx and sapphire and more. Slowly, the pigment worked through their bodies and rose to the surface of their skins, picking out patterns and images that had been lurking there all along, waiting to be seen.
