Done This Week
Feb. 8th, 2026 09:53 amAmazingly, there were no situations at work from during my vacation time. Things had been relatively quiet. They were this week as well. Which is to say, I spent nearly three hours straight on the floor (figuratively and literally), trying to diagnose a hydraulic valve issue, but that’s my actual job. Sometimes, the administrative bullshit falls away and I get to remember: oh, right, I’m a mechanic. *relieved sigh*
That being said! I got voluntold that I would be one of the designated people to deal with a new project/space that will have active pharmaceuticals. They are requiring us to get new work clearance physicals as a baseline, so when we grow an extra arm, they’ll be able to say whether we were already growing extra limbs before we started going into the Poison Room.
It is unlikely to be that dire. They are being overcautious to the point of parody. Our sister site, from whom we are taking over this project, worked on it with almost no safeguards in place. We have something of a reputation, within the wider company, for basically hogtying ourselves with policies and then desperately wondering why we struggle compared to other sites.
But in any case, I had to get a special physical. This was a clusterfuck. No one, from HR who set it up to the QA person driving the policies to the staff at the urgent care had any goddamn idea what was happening, who was doing it, or why. Because I am That Guy, I asked a bunch of inconvenient questions, to which HR said there would be an informational meeting...next week. After I had to get all this done ASAP, because it was ~critical for project momentum~.
Oh, and the physical took over an hour. And I had to wait over an hour for the blood draw afterward. At least I was on the clock for all that. Some of my coworkers waited two hours, because whoops, someone sent them to the wrong site. Because see above re: no one knows what’s happening.
Lewisia: 3 new pieces written
Day job: 43 hours
Cleaning: did maintenance on the brush hog
Gardening: several rounds of weed whacking, garden club post
Reading: Everything for Everyone: An Oral History of the New York Commune, 2052–2072 by Eman Abdelhadi and M.E. O'Brien (holy shit, it took a minute to warm up to the interview format, but then I got super into it and ended up being incredibly moved by the whole idea, scifi and hopepunk and journalism and inspiration)
Watching: finished all episodes of Revolutionary Girl Utena (I--whut...I’m not saying I didn’t enjoy it, I’m just saying I’m probably not smart enough for whatever that was, need to go rewatch the OVA and see if that makes sense now)
Listening: FOCUS by Tatsuya Maruyama (rec from both the Game Grumps, instrumental guitar, somehow every song sounds almost like a cover because the riffs feel so *correct*, I become convinced I must have heard the song before, just lovely)
Playing: Animal Crossing, where night fishing remains my nemesis in all video games...
Aftermarket Parts: one year post-surgery!
Clock Mouse: 126 minutes of planning work and 1101 words
