Here's a cool Dreamwidth tool: take the URL of any community and add /read to the end. It will show you posts by all the members. So for instance:

Focus

This is why some people hate interruptions and find it hard to switch from one activity to another. It includes people with ADHD, autism, executive function disorder, post-concussion-syndrome, other cognitive issues; many introverts; and most people who spend a lot of time doing things they are bad at (e.g. a linguistically inclined person doing math, or an athletic person forced to write text). Discuss with the people in your life what kinds of interruptions are okay or not, when, and how.

Focus is broken by interruption.

Bigger crops, fewer nutrients: The hidden cost of climate change

Climate change is silently sapping the nutrients from our food. A pioneering study finds that rising CO2 and higher temperatures are not only reshaping how crops grow but are also degrading their nutritional value especially in vital leafy greens like kale and spinach. This shift could spell trouble for global health, particularly in communities already facing nutritional stress. Researchers warn that while crops may grow faster, they may also become less nourishing, with fewer minerals, proteins, and antioxidants raising concerns about obesity, weakened immunity, and chronic diseases.

Finished the season finale, immediately turned around and wrote an episode tag.

Arrow (~2K words, gen, Mensah & Gurathin)
Set right during/after the end of the last scene in the episode.

I also saw on Tumblr that it's been renewed for a season two. Something delightful to look forward to!

Some people have “fuck you” money. You know, that amount you have in the bank where you can look at someone, say “fuck you, I quit” or “fuck you, I’m leaving” or anything like that.

This has now taught me that some people have “fuck you” time. and I could not be any happier with this knowledge.

This week's questions were suggested by [livejournal.com profile] silent_r_infork

1. What was the most sick that you've ever been?

2. What disease are you afraid of getting?

3. Are you a big baby when it comes to taking medicine/shots for your illnesses?

4. Is going to the doctor really THAT bad?

5. Would you have the flu twice a month if you were paid $1,000 for having it?

Copy and paste to your own journal, then reply to this post with a link to your answers. If your journal is private or friends-only, you can post your full answers in the comments below.

If you'd like to suggest questions for a future Friday Five, then do so on DreamWidth or LiveJournal. Old sets that were used have been deleted, so we encourage you to suggest some more!

Coming in a touch late this week to balance the scales from last time 😛

Do you have a rec for this week? Just reply to this post with something queer or queer-adjacent (such as, soap made by a queer person that isn't necessarily queer themed) that you'd, well, recommend. Self-recs are welcome, as are recs for fandom-related content!

Or have you tried something that's been recced here? Do you have your own report to share about it? I'd love to hear about it!

Polk is a mighty hunter. Dearborn is…well, she’s special.

Throwback to when the cryptids were just emerging from kittenhood and Dearborn hadn’t yet learned how to use the brakes.

[ID: A video with only ambient sound of Polk the tabby, paws clenched on a blanket that is bumping up and down with my hand underneath it; she has several reactions to various movements, trying to “capture” what’s under the blanket, until at the last second she is bowled out of frame by Dearborn the tortie running directly into, and then over, her.]

Mushrooms

Today we cooked up the mixed carton of fancy mushrooms from the Champaign Farmer's Market. They included pink oysters, blue oysters, lion's mane, and some little brown things with long stems and caps the size of a thumbnail. We sauteed them in sunflower oil, seasoned them with garam masala, and added some chopped bacon.

The result tasted good, but not much better than our usual mix of mushrooms, and it was twice as expensive. The oysters were good, but don't taste notably different from the usual white to light brown ones. We did not care of the stringy texture of the lion's mane.  Also, they cooked way fast and shrank way down, which left a small amount of stir-fry.  They might have worked better in something like wild mushroom spaghetti sauce.  So it was interesting to try, but not worth repeating.

This post has the funniest argument I have seen against AI:  "A computer can never be spiteful or horny.  Therefore a computer must never make art."

Now from an anthropological perspective, anything decorative rather than purely functional is "art" -- a contrasting color around the rim of a jug, for instance.  From a cultural perspective, however, art is about emotion.  It's how we express our human feelings about things we have seen or imagined as a way of communicating with other people.  So by that definition, a computer cannot make art, even if it can mash around colors and images.  An interesting point.

Today is mostly sunny and hot.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches at the feeders.  Blackbirds and catbirds are mobbing the mulberry tree in the house yard.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 7/10/25 -- I did some work around the patio.

WELL IT DAMN WELL DOES NOW.

I'm not sure of the timing -- the Welsh were arriving in 1700 or so and I'm not sure of the timeline for coal mining in specific, although of course there has been mining in Wales since prehistory. (Though probably not oggies.)

But there's been a strong relationship between Wales and Askazer-Shivadlakia since Welsh soldiers first settled there, as evidenced by the Shivadh-to-Cardiff-University pipeline. I would imagine there's been a steady trickle of immigration back and forth that has cross-pollinated quite a bit.

Looking at the recipe, I think it would be fairly easy to make kosher -- just sub in olive oil for the butter and lard in the crust -- and onions-and-potatoes are a staple of some branches of Jewish cuisine to start with, not to mention lamb.

Makes me want to do a story about some restaurant in Fons-Askaz like Lito's Empanadas here in Chicago -- a small storefront that does oggies stuffed with all kinds of different fillings, traditional and seafood and pizza and sweet dates. Great drunk food I bet.
