The house, which had already started as a Victorian with more than the usual share of gingerbread, had been transformed over generations into a confection inside and out. The ceilings swirled with pink frosting finish and sprouted lamps like macarons, while the cabinetry had gumdrop drawer pulls and panes of multicolored hard candy glass. Naturally, children loved the eccentric structure, but the witch living there wasn’t really the eating children sort, and anyway, the vintage reproduction oven would never accommodate a decent-sized child.
